A powder that transcends the centuries
Paprika originated on the American continent, where the Mayan and Aztec peoples were already cultivating red peppers long before the arrival of Europeans. Following the discovery of the New World, Spanish navigators brought these fruits back to Europe. Indeed, the Mediterranean and continental climates quickly encouraged their cultivation, notably in Spain, in the La Vera region, and in Hungary, where it became a national spice.
Consequently, in the 17th century, Hungarian rural communities developed sweet and mild varieties. The towns of Szeged and Kalocsa thus became the historic centres of production, with officially recognised traditional methods. Today, sweet paprika continues to charm chefs and amateur cooks the world over.
