What is dried oregano?

The’dried oregano leaves is made from the leaves of the oregano plant (Origanum vulgare), an aromatic herb from the same family as mint and thyme. Although it originates from the Mediterranean basin, it now grows in many regions of the world, notably Greece, Turkey, Italy, and Mexico. Once harvested at the peak of their maturity, we carefully dry the leaves to preserve all their aromas and offer you an herb with an intense and authentic fragrance from Madras Spices.

What does dried oregano taste like?

Dried oregano reveals a herbaceous, slightly peppery, and subtly bitter flavour, with a distinctive warm and fragrant note. Unlike fresh oregano, which is more delicate, dried oregano has a more concentrated and intense character. In short, a few pinches are enough to transform a simple recipe into a tasty and fragrant dish.

How to use dried oregano?

You've bought dried oregano but don't know how to use it? Don't panic, here are all the ways to incorporate it into your recipes.

In practice, dried oregano features in a wide variety of dishes. In Italian cuisine, it's a must-have on pizzas, in tomato sauces and pasta. Likewise, in Greek and Mediterranean cuisine, it perfumes salads, grilled vegetables, kebabs and marinades for lamb.

It is also found in many spice blends such as [Herbes de Provence], [za'atar], and [pizza seasoning]. Therefore, it pairs perfectly with [garlic powder], [thyme], [basil], [rosemary], and [cayenne pepper].

Moreover, in Mexican cuisine, oregano is also widely used in chilli recipes, tacos and spicy sauces, a less well-known but equally delicious use. Finally, it can be rubbed directly onto meats before cooking for a fragrant and flavourful result.

What dosage? Start with 1 teaspoon for a dish serving 2 people. Add it at the beginning of cooking for stews or at the end of cooking for pizzas and salads to preserve its aroma.

💡 Tip: Rub the dried leaves between your palms before adding them to your dishes, this releases the essential oils and intensifies the aroma!

A sacred herb since antiquity

Oregano is one of the oldest and most cherished aromatic herbs in history. Thus, the ancient Greeks attributed magical virtues to it and considered it a symbol of happiness and prosperity. Indeed, the word «oregano» comes from ancient Greek and literally means «joy of the mountain,» a beautiful image for this herb that grows naturally on the sunny hills of the Mediterranean basin.

Consequently, the Romans quickly adopted it and spread it throughout their empire, from Northern Europe to North Africa. In the Middle Ages, it entered monastery gardens and the books of physicians who recommended it for treating numerous ailments. Today, it remains one of the most widely used culinary herbs in kitchens around the world.
