What is ground cardamom?
The ground cardamom is made from the dried and finely ground seeds of cardamom pods, a plant from the same family as ginger and turmeric. Although native to India and Sri Lanka, it now grows in several tropical regions of the world, notably in Guatemala, which has become one of the world's leading producers. Once hand-picked, we dry and finely grind the seeds to obtain this powder with a floral, citrusy, and slightly spicy aroma that we offer you at Madras Épices.
What does ground cardamom taste like?
Ground cardamom reveals a floral, slightly citrusy and subtly spicy flavour, with a characteristic fresh and minty note. Unlike more neutral spices, it brings an exotic and elegant touch to every recipe. In short, a few pinches are enough to transform an ordinary dish into a truly unforgettable sensory experience.

A spice treasured for millennia
Cardamom is one of the oldest spices known to humankind. It is mentioned in ancient Indian texts as early as the 2nd millennium BCE. The Egyptians used it as a perfume and natural remedy, while the Greeks and Romans imported it as a highly sought-after luxury item.
Consequently, it has survived for centuries without losing any of its value or prestige. Today, its harvest remains meticulous and entirely done by hand – which explains its high price and its reputation as a precious spice. Cultivated primarily in India, Sri Lanka and Guatemala, it remains one of the most appreciated and widely used spices in kitchens around the world.
